Master of Education in Literacy 4+1 for PC Education Majors
The M.Ed. in Literacy 4+1 program provides an opportunity for undergraduate education majors with teacher certification to earn a master’s degree in one year (for full-time students). Graduates of this program are eligible for an additional certification as a PK-12 reading specialist through the Rhode Island Department of Education. PC education majors are eligible to apply in their senior year and, with approval from their academic advisor, may begin the graduate program in the fall or spring semester of that year.
For undergraduate education majors with teacher certification coming from colleges outside of PC, the M.Ed. in Literacy may be completed by following the 4+1 timeline.
Master of Education in School Counseling
The Master of Education in School Counseling program prepares its students to become members of school guidance departments. Students completing this pathway will be eligible for Rhode Island certification as a PK-12 School Counselor.
Graduate Certificate in Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has been an important focus of the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) for several years. We’re happy to announce Providence College will now offer pathways for educators to receive a stand-alone SEL Certificate or combine the SEL Endorsement with their M.Ed. in School Counseling.
Participants in SEL coursework will understand research-driven social emotional learning standards, their influence on a positive school culture and climate, practical application strategies of the standards, and how to measure the impact of the standards.
Master of Education in School Leadership
The Master of Education in School Leadership program (formerly School Administration) is designed to equip teachers with the skills necessary to become a school administrator. Recipients of this degree have gone on to educational leadership careers such as assistant principals, principals, assistant superintendents, and superintendents.

The program focuses on understanding the sociocultural contexts of urban teaching and developing strategies for student success.
Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics
According to the U.S. Department of Education, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut are experiencing a shortage of mathematics teachers. Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program (TCP)
The Teacher Certification Program prepares candidates to teach biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, physics, or social studies and to achieve full (initial) certification at the secondary level (grades 7 to 12). Approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education, your certification can also be used (through reciprocity) to achieve certification/licensure in at least 45 other U.S. States.
