Enhancing Education: Providence College Introduces Social Emotional Learning Graduate Certificate
In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, the importance of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is evident. Recognizing this, Providence College is proud to announce the launch of its new Social Emotional Learning Graduate Certificate. This certificate is designed to equip educators with the tools and strategies needed to support the holistic development of students, ensuring they thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
According to the Rhode Island Department of Education, Social and Emotional Learning “is a process for helping children and adults develop the fundamental skills for success in life.” These skills include “recognizing and managing our emotions, developing caring and concern for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively and ethically” according to the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
Dr. Patricia Nailor, program director of the school counseling program at Providence College says, “there is a large body of research that supports the notion that students who have a strong Social Emotional understanding have increased academic success and personal well-being. All adults who work with children (and adults) should embrace SEL and embed it in their work.”
Providence College’s SEL Certificate covers a wide range of topics, including emotional intelligence, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Participants will learn practical strategies for implementing SEL into their classrooms and enhance their ability to create a supportive learning environment for all students.
The three available pathways for interested candidates include combining the SEL Endorsement with your Master of Education in School Counseling from PC, completing the remaining (two) courses if you already have your M.Ed. in School Counseling from PC, or applying for the Graduate Certificate in SEL as a stand-alone.
