Providence College offers Graduate Literacy Program at an accelerated pace

The Rhode Island Department of Education highlights a need for more reading specialists in the state. With increasing awareness of the importance of literacy in early education, schools are seeking qualified professionals to lead efforts in improving reading skills among students. The graduate Literacy 4+1 program at Providence College is designed to meet this demand, preparing educators to take on these essential roles.

In addition to fulfilling the educational component of becoming a reading specialist, the graduate Literacy 4+1 program at Providence College follows the International Literacy Association Standards and fulfills the proficiency requirements in the Science of Reading in accordance with the Right to Read Act.

One of the aspects that differentiates this program from others is the accelerated pace. Within the 4+1 program, students can complete the required coursework within a little over a year if they have the necessary prerequisites. Providence College undergraduate students who want to get a jump start on this program can even begin to take courses in their senior year. This accelerated (or what we call 4+1) pace helps to offset the cost of a long graduate degree education. Prospective students from outside institutions are welcome to apply and can also take advantage of this accelerated pace.

The program covers essential areas such as literacy research, diverse literatures, and best practices for different grade levels, ensuring you are well-prepared to meet the literacy needs of students from elementary to secondary school.

Another important differentiator is the real-world experience gained through this program. Through practical field experience and internships, you’ll gain hands-on skills that are immediately applicable in educational settings. The program emphasizes the integration of literacy theory, curriculum, and practice with research and inquiry methods.

Nakyah Dagraca, a graduate of the graduate literacy program says, “One of my favorite aspects of the Literacy program was that it allowed me to get back in the classroom, visit different schools, and work with students in different grades. I initially thought I wanted to work with younger students but because the program allowed me to be in the field, I was able to make a more informed decision about what grades I liked to work with and what options are available.”

Graduates are eligible for additional certification as literacy specialists through the Rhode Island Department of Education, fulfilling proficiency requirements in the Science of Reading and structured literacy practices.

Finally, with a master’s in literacy, you’ll be more marketable and prepared for leadership roles, such as a literacy coach or consultant. The program’s focus on developing leadership skills ensures you can support school-wide literacy programs effectively.
